Wow. Looks like I got beaten to the punch, or whatever the expression is.
I think at Helen's you said you'd prefer to hear new bands in album order, so you can hear how they grow/develop, but a few of these I'd say the earlier stuff was better anyway. Saying that sometimes a best of/greatest hits is a good intro to a band.
Joy Division - best band that ever set foot on the planet. Unknown Pleasures is one of the best debut albums. Everything they did is excellent. I might be a bit biased here.
The Mission - 1st 3 albums (1st Chapter, God's Own Medicine and Children) are excellent and then they wane a little. Last album Aura is pretty damn good too.
Bauhaus - again I'm a little obsessive but I'd go for In The Flat Field (1st album). Also Love & Rockets, Tones On Tail, and Danny Ash and Peter Murphy solo stuff.
The Cure - consistently brilliant. Never ever listen to 17 Seconds, Faith and Pornography consecutively. Despite what Helen says the new album is top.
Sisters of Mercy - anything, but if you want the earlier stuff 1st, then the best ofs.
Curve - describe themselves as "filth pop" and are too good to be true. Doppelganger is a pretty good album (their 1st, I think)
VAST - highly recommended. Eponymous debut album is amazing.
Better stop before I get too carried away, but also Warrior Soul, Metallica, Led Zep, The Doors, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane's Addiction. And Danzig (1st album - self-titled), Samhain and Misfits (2 phases - 1st with Glenn Danzig which is dark/brutal and the 2nd after he left which is kinda tongue in cheek and a lot more fun).
Sorry I got carried away - I do by music.
Is it ok to friend you? (Can friend be a verb?)
Enjoy everyone's recommendations.
