Since I'm home alone eating instant noodles all day, I thought of
reviewing the different types available on the market and which ones
are the best.
I'm working on this with a bowl of Maggi Tom Yum, and it SUCKS!
MAGGI TOM YUM FLAVOUR
The tom yum flavour sucks. Period. It just can't compare to
Myojo. It tastes like a mix of saltwater and really hot chilli. Any
fragment of sourness is drowned out by the hotness. The noodle texture
is good, like your average instant noodles. I don't recommend it. The
people who made instant noodles popular in Malaysia can surely do
better than this...
MYOJO TOM YUM FLAVOUR
This is the best! The flavour is all
you might want from tom yum. It's sour and a little spicy. The noodles
are really thin and springy. Go for it!
CINTAN ASAM LAKSA FLAVOUR
I used to like Cintan noodles a lot, since you can control the texture
of the noodles just by cooking them longer. Now they are horrible.
Eating any of these will leave a chemical soapy aftertaste in your
mouth, and no one wants to be reminded of the ill-effects of eating too
much instant noodles. The asam flavour is ok.
MYOJO CHICKEN TANMEN / CHICKEN ABALONE FLAVOUR
Anyone remember this from OBS? The traditional chicken noodles. Not too bad, but there's a better one...
TUNG-1 CHICKEN ABALONE FLAVOUR
This is the King of Chicken Noodles. Why? Because it smells blooooooody
good. The package advertises: "Where's that nice smell coming from?"
Indeed, included in the package is a special onion flavoured oil pack.
They're very proud of this oil, saying that it's the No. 1 Unique Onion
Oil in the World. The seasoning is barely adequate. If you cook this,
cook it with very little water.
On top of that, this noodle is the best because it can be eaten out of
the pack, like MAMEE! The noodles are fried such that they are very
crispy and taste like noodles to snack on. The noodles are dense, thin,
and real springy. Kind of like ZOW-ZOW Duck noodles.
Now we come to the dry varieties.
INDOMIE MI GORENG ORIGINAL FLAVOUR
This is the undisputed champion of mi goreng. The noodles are a special
yellow type which is thick and captures the sauce well. Furthermore,
this pack has the most amount of seasoning of all the noodles! A
whopping 4 different types! Sauce, msg powder, chilli powder, and oil
with shallots. Cook this in batches. One pack is not enough.
MYOJO RAMEN-100 CHAR MEE EXTRA SPICY
The noodles are typical Myojo fare, and the sauce is good. It just
isn't spicy enough. It tends to retain a lot of MSG too, because not
much oil is included with the packet. I'd only recommend this on a
tight budget.
CQYD MI GORENG
The noodles are very small. Very thin. Not value for money. But they taste real good too. The flavouring is intense.
The Korean varieties.
SHIN RAMYUN KIMCHI FLAVOUR
The best kimchi noodles you will ever get. So good, even korean food
courts shops try to pass it off as their own ramen. Don't be fooled by
them! The noodles are distinctly different. They're way springier and
thicker. They cook very fast. Take note too that the soup is very hot,
though not as hot as my real kimchi veggies in the fridge. The seafood
flavour is not so incredible. It tastes like miso soup.
That's all I can remember for now. Might do an update on Cup noodles. Have fun eating!
