Must...have...vegetables...

Just came home from a 5-day business trip in Austin, TX. Five days of chili, Tex-Mex, steak, burgers, BBQ. Heaven for a meat-lover.

Except that I'm not a carnivore, I'm an omnivore - and a Californian. I came home with a quiet, powerful craving for green.

I do seem to get these veggie cravings after too much heavy, sweet and rich food - especially noticed about mid-December with all the holiday noshies everywhere. This also happened when I came home from a 5-week stay at a friend's house in Scotland in early summer, when the only fresh local vegetables were potatoes. I did what I'm doing tonight:

My soup pot is now simmering - and full of squash, leeks, broccoli, peas, onions, and rutabaga. A little brown rice for body. Looking forward to ladling it into a handled mug and slurping it down to ward off the winter (and the slight cold I brought home from the conference), most likely with a small glass of Napa white.

What do you crave mid-December?
