Thanks. I'd wanted to write a "Fourth of July horse-race" story in my Bakerstown series for a while (this was the image I'd come up with when I'd listened to Copeland's "Rodeo") - and the prompt offered an opportunity to tell it. When you want to tell a story bad enough, sometimes the words just tumble out.

They work everywhere, don't they? And as I say in my summation of the Bakerstown series, "The 1880s: A self-appointed man of the law, and his doctor friend who's good with a gun, stop crime in their town. But enough about 'Tombstone'."

Couldn't resist - kill two horse-stories with one prompt, so to speak. (I also loved having Silver Blaze lose the damn race as she would have - NOBODY was better with horses in the West than the Comanche.)
