Clarkie is adorable in that film. Can easily see his admiration for Holmes as a flat-out crush.

I love Clarkie! It's a shame his chambermaid wife joke turns out to be fiction. I love that part in the movie. The discomfort on RDJ-Holmes face is fantastic. (But your story works well too!)

Clarkie's admiration of Holmes can be read either way - a constable amazed at a civilian's prowess, or as an unrequited crush. That joke was such a cute moment - and definitely foreshadows that he'll help Holmes get away.

I almost like it better if Clarkie was just pulling Holmes's leg a little with the chambermaid line. I like to think that part of Holmes's discomfort was his inner monologue saying, "Wait -- he has a wife? How could I have missed that? Am I slipping?"

"Joke, sir." (Whew, Holmes thinks, I was right after all, he's as gay as I am.)
