... and will struggle on with the living...

Strangely enough I spent the whole day putting together a research project about Moisés Kaufman's "The Laramie Project", after I'd previously decided to do something focusing on Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451". Just now, having seen the photo of Mathew Sheppard, the coincidence (is it, really?) hit me. I've been writing about him, and his agony, and the people of Laramie, and the hatred, and the pain, and the love (yes, the love) for the last ten hours or so and it's come to me that even if I didn't recall that today was "the day"... I kinda DID.

Kaufman and company have paid their tribute creating the play. I'll pay mine bringing "TLP" to my classes and committing myself to the research. The classroom is my dominion and I'll make the most of it: I'll try and create little pockets of tolerance and understanding and acceptance by resorting to the weapon I'm most comfortable with - literature.

Mathew Shepard, you are in my prayers, and I REMEMBER.

THE ULTIMATE SILENCE
October 12, 1998

Six years ago today, Matthew Shepard was murdered for being homosexual.

What will you do to end the silence?
