I feel that as long as the comment either relates to the topic or is of interest to the original poster, it's fine. As for when two people get into their own comment chat, it amuses me.
I use the comments section of my journal and my friends for carrying on conversations. It's better than e-mail, because it's easy to follow the whole conversation and doesn't involve using 17 different colored fonts. So, no, I don't mind when my friends (lol...all **3** of you) write things that veer off the topic of my original post. I can see how this would be annoying to other people with larger friend groups, and I can definitely see how it would be annoying to people who barely know or don't know at all the people who are commenting in their journals.
Thanks for bringing this up. I'm going to try to be more aware of my commenting. See...there I go again...it's all about me and what I do.
If I had a problem with vague or unrelated comments, I'd be in trouble with half my friends' list. ;)
Seriously, I like comments that actually relate to my entry if it's a serious entry, but I love the tangental comments that spawn and go their own way, too. I love hearing what people have to say about anything, everything, all the time. :)
I love random, completely unrelated comments, too, which is a good thing. ;)
I guess I just like comments. It's one of the best features of LJ - the ability to instantly talk about something someone wrote, the ability to just say 'yeah, me too' or 'thanks for sharing', the ability to read other peoples comments on an entry that interests me, the ability to get random unrelated things that still mean someone is thinking about me...
aheh...seriously, no, I don't have a problem with that sort of stuff at all.
People came and read what I wrote and happened to be there when they feel the need to speak, then so be it. At least I know people are reading what I'm writing. But like someone else said, it also depends on the situation. If I'm specifically asking for help or advice or input or feedback or whatever, I don't care if someone starts their own thought(s), as long as somewhere in there is a response to my request.
I love when people get into a dialogue in my comments :)

I'm very guilty of doing that.

I wonder if he called me that because I was smiling, or if he did it because he doesn't know my name.
