Ideal Weight?

My BMI is 56.3, and the site tells me my ideal body weight is 141 pounds!  Holy Hanna!  Uh, no.  I'm thinking 170 would be fabulous.

I'm really wondering about healthy body weight these days.

My mom grew up in Iran, on a large servant-worked farm with 9 siblings. She and her siblings had access to two other working orchards close to their primary property where they spent the summer sometimes working, but mostly playing, climbing trees, playing tag and eating healthy organics.

My mom is 5'5", after she gave birth to me at 33, she weighed 115lbs. Her weight in 1985, when we came to canada, when she was 38, was 110lbs. I really wonder if Western food has destroyed her health. And I'm not talking about the types of food, I'm talking about the quality of stuff like rice, lentils, meats, and fruits we have here.

When I first came to canada, and keep in mind we were refugees. I was considered so underweight by the doctors that did our assessment that a round of blood tests were done on me. (I was fine actually) But all the kids in my classes in Iran were like me, they were just skinny because we had better food there, (ironically) compared to the mass produced food in N. America. I do think Europe has higher standards for food. Of course, by the times I was 10, I was already at a "normal" western weight.. a "normal" weight that I no longer consider "normal." And of course, at "normal weight" I had a weird thyroid that decided to go on the fritz every once in a while, and my iron is still very low.

I blame the food. And my mom is now overweight.

What's normal for person A is incredibly unhealthy for person B. Stupid charts!!! They can go to hell for all I care about. I hate those damned charts!

I definitely think you're right about the quality of food in Europe. I was just reading about this somewhere...let me try to remember where.

I hate the charts too. It starts at birth when pediatricians start telling you how your baby's body compares to other babies' without taking into account heredity, culture or anything else.

You should have seen my parents' faces when it was suggested they couldn't feed their children.

Oh my gosh, I can just imagine! It's outrageous really. They had every reason to be offended.
