any idea on how to keep raspberries under control (besides ripping the little monsters out?)

for those who don't know... raspberries spread via rhizomes and can spread like wildfire.

I was thinking of a metal 'shield' buried under the ground around the bed but I'm not sure how deep it should be

personally I'm for ripping the buggers out but its not my call/my garden, I volunteer at this place

Pertinent info : I'm on the border of zones 5 and 6, in the NE US (Connecticut)
