Acidifying Soil (and what to do in the meantime)

Apr 05, 2014 17:27

I've been thinking about planting blueberries for a few years, but a sale on the plants earlier this week tipped my hand. I cut down the ceder shrubs that I hate (just not a ceder shrub kind of girl) and ordered a ph test kit. All was going well until this afternoon when I tested the soil.

Crud. That's about as nutural as you can get.

Ive done some research and found that peat moss, sulpher dust, and coffee grounds can all be used to lower Ph and I have all of those on hand right now. I also have a nearly unlimited supply of pine shavings that we use in our rabbit's cage. I have heard that pine needles can increase acidity, would this work the same? Its full of pee and poo as well so it breaks down

So here's my delema. I can amend the soil with what I have now and go ahead and plant my bushes straight in the yard, but I don't know if it will be acidic enough with just one mass "treatment" so to speak. Or if it will be better to just get some larger pots and keep them potted this year while I monitor and amend their eventual home to more suitable levels.
