bulbs!

I went by Home Depot yesterday and they already had bulbs (and bareroot plants) out!  They had several things that I wanted to plant: bleeding heart, stargazer lilies, crocosmia, and Siberian iris.

How soon can I plant them?   There’s still LOTS of snow on the ground, but can I plant them as soon as I can dig and the ground isn’t rock hard, or should I wait until its warm (ish) out?   I’m seeing conflicting info online, where some things even said to wait until the last frost date to plant bulbs.

Do you think it’s likely that the bleeding heart will bloom this year?  I’m growing some by seed, but it would be nice to have some heart shaped flowers this year.  The bareroot (or whatever they are) bleeding hearts are 3 for $7, as opposed to one plant for $8 in the late spring were I to buy it already growing in a pot (though I guess that way I’d be guaranteed blooms this year buying it that way).

Should I plant the bleeding heart and Siberian iris early since they’re earlier blooming plants and then the lilies and crocosmia later since they’re more warm weather, late flowering plants?  Does it matter?  I guess they’re probably not going to be the best of quality since they’re going to be sitting in plastic bags in the hardware store for months….

Any advice?
