When do you plant your spring bulbs in the UK?

I went to my local gardening centre today and saw that they were already selling spring bulbs (daffodils, tulips etc). I was just wondering when any of you who are UK-based tend to plant spring bulbs?

The labels on the packs were decidedly unhelpful ("plant in fall"), the assistant in the shop simply said that you can start planting now, and the BBC gardening website suggests planting from October to December. I'd like to do it sooner rather than later, especially with a bank holiday coming up, but am concerned that it's still a little too warm...and am probably being hopelessly optimistic in wishing for a week or two of nice weather in September to make up for the dismal excuse for a summer that we've had this year.

So, do any of you have a preferred week/month of autumn in which to plant spring bulbs?
