I think the zucchini is dying.

I convinced my Mom to put a zucchini plant in the garden this year, and it's been... interesting.  It took a while to get going (the first half dozen zucchini got about 3-4 inches long and as thick around as my finger, then fell off and died), but it's produced three or four good-sized zucchini, and one that we picked because it was getting bigger than we thought would be tasty -- it weighed in at 2 pounds, 10 ounces, and gave me six cups of shredded zucchini, so yay!

And now it appears to be dying.  I... didn't actually know you could kill zucchini, but maybe the high heat and humidity this summer has done it (I'm in south-eastern Ontario -- we're officially in drought) despite our attempts to keep it well watered.  But almost all the leaves have yellowed and/or wilted to nothing, badly enough that Mom chopped them off today to see if the plant will recover without so much dying vegetation dragging it down.  That's left it with 2-3 feet of vine travelling across the garden, with a few smallish leaves and some blossoms at the end furthest from the root.

Has anyone else seen this happen to previously-healthy-looking zucchini plants?  Should I expect it to come back, or is it likely really and truly dead?
