I don't think these guys bite, but every spring we get a bunch of them in the house, especially our bathroom. I don't want to find out whether they bite, though, because I'm sort of terrified of ants. I had a really bad experience with them when I was little and I basically had a colony living right outside my bedroom window. They came in through the window and into my bed and bit me several times until I woke up crying, so... :|
I don't know anything about ants, but the one thing that struck me was that your pot hasn't got any drainage holes. Did you put rocks in the bottom for drainage instead? This is important, as you don't want to accidentally drown your beautiful vine! I recommend loading up the bottom with rocks, or transplanting the plant into a container with proper drainage holes. If the container is wood you can simply drill a few holes into the bottom on the planter on the sides without disturbing the roots.
I was out there this afternoon and moved it around to check to see if there were more ants. There was a small puddle of water underneath (and more ants!), and I'm assuming there is a small drainage hole on the bottom as I watered it this morning. It might be a small one that I would have to look for to find. I'll keep checking over the next few days as I water it and I'll look for water underneath again. There is SOMETHING allowing water to train, at least.
