Feb 08, 2012 22:41

Does anyone know what these mystery seed pods/dead heads I collected in the fall might be?

I think #2 is a yucca.

The first one looks just like a Jimpson Weed pod. Beautiful large white flowers that open and give off scent only at night.

Oh, you beat me to it.

I love your kitty petting fish icon.

Thank you, both! I just looked at google images for jimson weed/datura seeds, and it certainly looks like it!

But oooof, looks like mine were open maybe too early? The pods were greenish and seeds light brown... not at all like the black ones I'm seeing in images. Think they may still be viable?

My moonflower (also a datura) has/had pods that look just like yours-open and all. As I understand it, they open as the pod dries. FWIW, I left a few pods on my plant (most I cut off as they opened and am saving for spring), and by the time the plant died back, the pods were wide open and almost completely empty.

First one is datura, I'd say

#2 looks a bit like a hibiscus (note icon). Does the pod have five sections or just four? Not a yucca, since the seeds are round, and not flat.

Ah. Indeed. I was looking on an ipod and couldn't see the detail before.
