Winter?

Feb 07, 2012 15:28

I shouldn't be complaining. The weather here has been spectacular for about a month with a few days of "reminder" winter weather, but where is the "real" winter? It's supposed to be cold, not nearly 60. My plum tree has flower buds on it. I hope it doesn't actually bloom or there'll be no plums this year when it finally freezes. The bulbs have ( ... )

not sure where you're located... but this mild winter is going to be a big problem in the NE US. the maple syrup harvest will be nonexistent (although all the stuff you buy in supermarkets comes from who only knows where) and I'm already seeing wooly adelgid in the hemlocks. Last year they were all killed off in the cold winter, not this year.

and that's just the tip of the iceberg (no pun intended)

It's a weird year, but yeah, the data suggests winters are getting milder... so more of this to come.

Many of my fall plants are still chugging along, including the cilantro, leaf lettuce, and spinach. Didn't cover them once, and even though it has dipped into the teens more than once they've bounced back. It's been in the 60s and 70s more often than it has been below freezing. We'll see if this cold weather moving in now does anything to them...

(I'm in zone 6b, incidentally)

One respected meteorologist said this winter is NOT due to global warming. Not denying global warming, just stating that these peculiar weather patterns we're experiencing over much of the northern hemisphere, at least, are due in large part to the volcanic eruptions near Reykjavik.
It takes a while for volcanic dust to settle out, so we could have strange winter weather for next winter, too, and possibly the one after that. Or things could be "as usual" once again.
We'll see, eh?

Here in south Australia we are.having an unusually cold summer. Global climate change is helping my little garden, which usually is almost completely dead at this time of year. Sigh.

My best friend lives in Victor Harbor, but she doesn't have a garden to talk about! I'm up here in Oregon now. I miss the long growing season in Oz.

Our winters are usually pretty mild, but this year has been pretty crazy. We had about 2 weeks of our normal winter weather. I've pretty much given up on it going back to winter weather at this point, because spring weather here usually starts in February anyway.

And no rains at all, which is bad bad bad because this is wildfire country. If we don't get some rains this spring this area is going to go up like a torch come summertime.
