More blooms if I cut them back?

As I've enjoyed my garden this year, I've experienced with cutting some flowers back as they die down to see if the plant will put off a second round of blooms. I've had varied success and I'm wondering what plants will bloom more than once if cut back.
Specifically, I'm wondering about these:
Beebalms
Day Lily
Zinnias
Salvia
Dianthus (Pinks)
Mums

I've done some googling on this topic, but it is too specific for my needs. My main goal is to find out if I cut the old blooms, will new ones appear?

flower: lily, flowers
