banana plant help

so here is a photo of what my banana plant is currently doing:

a bit of the history:

i got this banana plant a few years ago. i've always kept it indoors as a houseplant, as i'm in zone 5. it did great it's first year, and even after keeping it in the back room where it gets cold in the winter, it survived extremely well. following that it just kept growing and growing. the next winter it didn't do so well. i guess it got too cold in that room and the banana plant started looking sick. the leaves were browning starting with the bottom, older leaves. i would peel them away as they died off. eventually we moved the plant to the living room, in front of a sunny window where it would get more heat. it continued to brown. now, it looks like this (above photo). when we went on vacation last month for a week and came back was when it grew a whole new plant to the left. then just a few weeks later it started growing that little baby in the front. it's leaves are still browning, and are also starting to on the newer plant. i hope it doesn't have some banana disease that i can't cure :(

my questions:

should i try to separate them? i'm not sure how possible this is, i don't really know how they grow underneath. i don't want to kill them. i'd like to keep them all alive if possible.

also, is this pot too small for just the one? my husband thinks it's roots are cramped.

thanks in advance for any help you can give me!
