The cilantro and marigold companion plantings have done pretty much nill in deflecting insect predators. I actually plucked a cricket off the cilantro, as it was eating it! and crushed it between my fingers with vengeance.
My poor baby squash plants are almost completely decimated--there are only two left. I feel like a failure as a parent.
And so, in an insect-driven rage blackout, I concocted the following:
olive oil
sriracha
oregano oil
...mixed into a water solute and applied to the remaining squash, as well as the other plants.
It's either the cure or it's napalm. I have informed my boyfriend that although I acknowledge how unattractive it will be, for our second season planting, we will be utilizing a mesh cover for the plants.
**Edit**-- the crickets have actually done very little to my green beans, which is interesting. I think for my next planting, I may put them around the perimeter with squash on the inside?**
