Hrm...the mahonia post kind of got me thinking.
Anyone got any good tips on where to look for native species of shrubby things that *won't* eat your land?
My google-fu is sucking and I really want a database where you can plug in your state or zone, sun conditions, and the ideal height/spread of what you're looking for and have it populate a list of shrubberies to investigate. The ones I'm finding are like looking for a proverbial native needle in an overwhelming haystack. I can find lots of things *not* to plant!
(I figure it's worth a shot, you know?)
