Last fall, I picked up a bunch of small clay pots from the FREE box outside one of my favorite thrift stores, thinking I could use them when spring came.  And, since spring is coming, I'm starting to think about what they could hold.

Ahaha, I figured, but I don't know all that much about plants so I want to walk into Home Depot or wherever saying something more than like, "Hey, where are your small plants?" So I was just looking for some recommendations. :)

Haha, yeah I get you! If you want something for your window ledge, I would recommend a row of potted herbs - fairly easy to care for and cheap to obtain, so if it all goes wrong you've not wasted much!

That's what I'm thinking, yeah! And I've been working on cooking for myself a bit more (lol, look at me, I'm domestic!) so maybe that will encourage me, too. Thanks!

If you have drip trays, African violets would work, but they will outgrow those sizes fairly quickly....

I suggest drip trays because the best way to stop root-rot on AVs is to water from the bottom.

I think herbs would work better; you can keep cutting them back, so they won't overgrow the pots.

Thank you so much! I'm thinking herbs are definitely the better option.

African Violets do sound nice. Pots seem a good size for them too.

Awesome, thanks! carmy_w mentioned that they'll outgrow the pots; can I just plant one seed and see if that works?

Those are pretty tiny pots. Seedling sized, really. I wouldn't try growing anything to adulthood, so to speak, in them. Except maybe miniature African violets (in the bigger pots -- regular-sized African violets would still be too big). Things'll get rootbound in them very quickly. Watering would be an issue, too.

I'll definitely look into miniature African violets, thanks! And I'm sure you're right about them being a bit too tiny... I just thought they would look darling with little teeny plants, haha. Maybe starting things off and then repotting would work better. :)
