garden advice

so, first of all, i have to confess that i'm more of a cook than a gardener. BUT i've been fantasising about starting a kitchen garden, just to have fresh produce on hand because it tastes so much better. i'm about to move into a new apartment, with a large private balcony, so my fantasy should soon become a reality.

i'd like some suggestions for plants that i can grow on my balcony kitchen garden. i'm a complete novice, so i don't really know much about what plants i can grow. i live in southeast queensland, australia. my new apartment is a block away from the ocean. the balcony isn't shaded, so it will be in the sun for most of the day (although i will probably invest in some shade for it). also, i'm only renting, so i don't want anything really big that i won't be able to move easily.

on my list already (but please tell me if any of these seem doomed to fail): tomatoes, parsley, mint, thyme, chives, oregano, strawberries.

garden style: kitchen gardening, urban gardening, location: australia
