True potato seeds?

Sep 15, 2010 13:44

Has anyone any experience with true potato seeds? I had some potato fruit last year and no clue what they were. Got a lot more this year from the same plants I'd left tubers in overwintering and thought to google it as I hadn't heard of potato fruit before.

I've found a few useful website about this and some people seem to believe potatoes forming fruit indicate it's quite good if you get them, that the variety grows well in your location.

Seed can be saved and grown into vines, though it probably won't be true to parent plant (which I find exciting for mystery potatoes personally :D).

What I'm interested in is best way to harvest the seeds and prepare them for saving. I was also a little worried about their toxicity and if gloves are required when cutting them up to get the seeds out. I know they're inedible but can't find out if touching them bare handed is bad.

seeds, vegetable: potato, propagation: seed saving
