Vertical Gardening

Has anyone had any experience - positive or negative - with vertical gardening?

In my never ending quest to expand my garden, I'm contemplating building something like this.  My version of this lovely planter would probably look a lot more utilitarian and be a bit longer.  Okay...a lot longer.  Eight feet longer.  I have a space that isn't working for green beans but might be brilliant for strawberries.  I say might be brilliant because it's along a north facing fence which means it doesn't get all day sun. (Also why it was a bad choice for green beans.)  It's a risk I'm willing to take considering every other strawberry that I've planted has died a horrible, dusty death under the unrelenting Zone 8B sun.  My hope is that the partial shade will prevent plant death yet still give enough sunlight for the fruit to ripen.

Or I could be out of my mind.

Thoughts, opinions, suggestions, experiences, encouragement?
