Can tomato plants grow from cuttings?

I have a really thriving cherry-tomato ("Sweet 100") plant. Unfortunately, a bit of the top has grown higher than the stakes could support. I would have trimmed it back, but fast as it grew the darn thing began bearing blossoms and fruit, so I couldn't bring myself to. Despite the fact that it was beginning to crowd the other, less aggressive tomato-varieties.

Well, this afternoon I was irrigating. About ten minutes ago I came back to shift the sprinkler: under the extra weight of water droplets, the top-heavy bit of the plant has snapped off!

I immediately picked up the broken-off bit and shoved the end into damp earth, before running inside to post. Can this extra bit be saved? It's a substantial branch.

Or should I just cut my losses, secure in the knowledge that the plant will just laugh off the amputation and bounce right back?

propagation: cuttings, vegetable: tomato
