Today when I glanced out my window I saw an American Goldfinch. He was so tiny I almost missed him. He was perched on top of one of the first sunflowers I planted from a smaller variety of seeds I saved last fall. I had two of them growing in one of those Home Depot orange buckets and the blooms were long gone. The little bird was happily eating the seeds as he sat on the pod head. I wondered why the top of the pods looked eaten but this is the first I've caught a bird perched for a snack. By the time I was able to find my camera he was gone. Maybe I'll get lucky next time.
Summer is obviously on its way out. I don't recall ever having such an odd summer. It wasn't bad from a comfort point of view but some of the posies were obviously not happy. And I have a couple of things that have never bloomed, this one in particular which I am totally clueless as to what it is. It's big and bushy with no buds in sight. Very disappointing and I've got a couple of them. They came from a mixed seed packet.
