The Story of the shade garden in pictures.
The back of my yard, where the mulberries grow, was sort of dark and unappeasing. So I put a compost pile there. It seemed to fit in with the general mood of bleah. But the pile became unwieldy and the back went beyond bleah to yuck. The boys got me a compost bin. At about the same time, my neighbor from across the street gave me a bunch of hostas.
Hostas like shade
so I put them back there.
I also cleaned up the compost/weed/bramble pile and
and put the compost bin in a corner.
Underneath the old compost pile were bricks. Lots of old bricks.
And I thought-- wouldn't they make a nice border for. . . something back here in no-man's land?
Impulsively, I bought two Bleeding Hearts. They like shade and I'm thinking of making a shade garden
why not just stick them back there for encouragement?
Well now. The encouragement Bleeding Hearts were all planted. That meant I kinda had to make that border now, didn't it.
With the help of The Boy, it was done in less than 2 days.
What else do you put in a shade garden besides Bleeding Hearts and black mulch? If you go to a street fair, you can pick up some Shocking Pink coleus. And you can order Chocolate Mint coleus on-line. And African Impatiens.
And then realize that the plants ordered on-line are teeny tiny and number 24.
After a week it looks like some of the African Impatiens are not flourishing. The coleus seem happy and the hostas-- whoa nelly!
