Giving 2009 another try

Mar 25, 2009 11:09

Hello all.  Last year I planted a few things, sunflowers, cilantro and tomatoes.  I am in zone 8b (Austin, TX) and my property backs up to a city park that has many animals.  The deer seem to be the issue.  Everything I planted last year was eaten.  Squirrels and armadillo have also snacked on my stuff.  :(

I would like to give gardening another whack this year.  There is a 6' fence separating my yard form the neighbors.  I was thinking of making some sort of enclosure and making a 6' x 6' or so little garden for tomatoes, cilantro, basil, squash and cabbage.  Does anyone have anywhere to direct me on an easy way to enclose a garden to keep out the deer, and some suggestions on what and when to plant.

This area will pretty much have full sun.

EDIT:

I found this link online to build a "greenhouse of sorts".  What are your opinions on this structure for keeping out pests and also, I am wondering how I can create something like this that will allow me access. Since I would be using it more for pest control than a little sauna for my garden.  Here is the link:  http://www.instructables.com/id/Build_an_Easy_5_x_5_Home_Greenhouse_for_under_25/?&sort=NEWEST&limit=50&offset=50

TIA for any advice.
Tracy
