recycling water

I'm looking ahead to my summer gardening and thinking about water. Last year my irrigation efforts lacked consistency, and my plants suffered for it. This year I find myself with my income cut to about 2/3 what it was, so my dreams of a network of hoses and sprinklers are going to have to be postponned. Instead, I'm thinking about ways to save and recycle rainwater and clean waste water.

For the rainwater, of course the solution is a rain barrel. I'm working on that--by the end of this weekend I should have a food-grade plastic barrel that I'll only have to figure out how to fit with a spigot and open for collecting water from a drainspout... then I'll have to figure out how to get that drainspout configured so the rain will go into the barrel instead of out to the street.

The non-contaminated waste water seems easier to plan for--collecting water boiled for cooking veggies, for instance, and pouring it into a flower bed after it has cooled.

Any experience/advice to offer?
