friday night well spent

I was going to update last night, but i was too tired.

My friend who has a plot in the same community gardens convinced me to go gardening last night since it was such a beautiful day. Two weeks ago I started some seeds of butternut squash, jack o lanterns, green zuchini, and yellow zuchini. I thought, ahhh i'll just go pop the zuchini and squashes in the ground and then be done. Of course it didn't work like that. Of course I was there for 3.5 hours instead of 45 minutes. But it felt good so it was okay.

I stopped by co-gardener Sarah's to pick up some tools. She informed that last week she popped in some bok choi and brussel sprouts (i think like seriously 3 rows of brussel sprouts) and some tri-color beans. She also said things were sprouting! yay! But that the weeds were prevalent.

When i got to the garden i saw that she was right about the weeds. There were a lot of them. I think my plan tomorow is to take newspapers and old ground cover to put down in between beds. I see other peoples gardens and they have seriously like NO GROWTH between their beds. How the fuck do they do it?

But then, the beauty of gardening. I picked a bed and just went to town. I put leafy mulch down around the bed and hauled some soil up to spread and mix in with the bed. Lesson of hte day: a barrel half full of soil weighs WAY more than a barrel full of dry leaves. The bed and surrounding area looked much better. And then I popped the seedlings in. I always feel bad when i have multiple seedlings, but then just get rid of half of them. Seedling abortion i call it. But there is no way i have room for multiple jack o lantern plants. So i found some nice people to give the extra seedlings to. Oh the joy of the community garden.

Things that were coming up: Onions and garlic!!!!!, red radishes, nastiurtiums, potatoes, little tiny lettuces, spinach, hmmm some other things i don't remember as well. The peas are not up though, which makes me a little concerned. PEAS WHERE ARE YOU???

Plans for tomorrow (I'll never get all of this done): Plant cucumbers and soy beans. Newspapers down in between rows, weed beds, rehaul another bed. either half hte big one or the small one.
