On Sunday, Juliette and I were both exhausted from the day before. She headed home (she lives about an hour outside of Amsterdam) and I managed to make myself leave my hotel around 2:00 in the afternoon to take a walk and see some of the city. Fortunately the weather on Sunday was warm and sunny.
of course the first place i headed to was the flower market. the flower market in amsterdam used to be floating stalls along the singel canal. now the stalls are fixed - part in the water and part on land. the stalls are all along the left side of the photograph. most of the stalls carried the same things - lots of tulip, lily, and dahlia bulbs/tubers. a couple had cut flowers and a couple sold container plants. one stall was notably beautiful, but unfortunately i didn't get a picture of it.
here is another shot of the flower market.
there was a little street right off the flower market with a few restaurants with outdoor seating, so i decided to stop and get a bite to eat at a little Spanish tapas place.
As I was sitting here, a couple came by playing the accordion and the tambourine. It doesn't get much more European than that!
here's a shot in amsterdam of people shopping. the people walking all over the street struck me. there are so few cars in some areas (at least on this sunday) that people kind of walk wherever. or perhaps this was just a pedestrian shopping area? it was hard for me to tell b/c the streets are not always constructed of a different material than the pedestrian areas.
I loved this store. I found Amsterdam in general to be a little on the gray side generally. So these brightly colored lego stacks holding containers of colorful flowers definitely attract attention. The store had good music on too. I ended up buying 2 pillowcases for throw pillows, but the store had a ton of interesting stuff from jewelry to clothes to knick knacks and rugs. It was a little on the modern ecentric side.
Here's the typical canal shot. ;)
i mean, really, what a nice way to spend a sunny sunday afternoon!
i think this is either someone's houseboat or it's a "model" houseboat.
looking back at my pictures, i think i was just taking pictures of whatever i saw that was colorful because overall the city seemed gray to me. it's a bit odd that the architecture didn't make an impression on me and that everything seemed a bit washed out. so when i saw color, i was just drawn to it. here are a few shots of homes that looked inviting along one of the canals.
i got sucked in to watching 2 men play a chess game in a little square/courtyard.
I was in love with this little grocery store. Every time I walked by it, I wanted to go in. The fruit display was just beautiful!
here are some shots of cool street art
And here's where I ended my day - at the Irish bar across the street from my hotel. I took this first picture from the little patio of my hotel room. The Irish bar was the place to be around 6-8 pm when the sun was shining on that side of the bar and all the tables are right there along the canal. I sat out there for dinner on Sunday. It just called to me as I walked by.
