i got some really good advice from someone who is helping me get up to speed on a particular software product. she said, "you may just need to get used to allowing some parts of it to remain as a 'black box,' until it becomes necessary to look inside."
really great advice. i've been trying very hard to understand every step of this process that someone else created, without having an incling as to what the big picture looks like, and it's taking forever and leaving me feeling frustrated a lot. after she said that, i was able to let go of trying to understand everything and move forward to the part that i really need to learn - the part i'm going to be using most of the time. it would be nice to understand everything about the software, and in time, i might, but to be able to do my job in 1-2 weeks, i need to skip ahead a few steps and get to the other side. (i.e., i don't need to understand all the processes involved in creating the data tables from the raw data. i need to understand what data tables are available to me in the end and how to use the software to query the final data tables to make reports.)
