Schizophrenia would be an excellent example of natural selection, along with downs syndrome and other manifestations that inhibit reproduction and/or fitness.
I am also one to believe that, with anorexia, its not entirely a genetic thing.
When comparing schizophrenia and anorexia, please understand that anorexia and other body-image type dealies are self perpetuating. There are people out there who, due to peer pressure or otherwise, choose to behave in a manner consistent with anorexia/bulimia. Sometimes a parent will reflect standards upon their children, but oftentimes the accepted ideal female body type is enough. This requires no genetic precondition.
You cannot pressure somebody into schizophrenia (well, maybe you can with drugs and torture, but thats beyond the scope of self-obsessed teenie boppers I assume) and thus the uglier facets of anorexia/bulemia arise. Look at all the pro-ana BS on LJ and everywhere else. Encouraging people towards a pro-ana lifestyle is no different than pushing heroin, in my opinion. Those who encourage the lifestyle know exactly what they're doing and don't care. This does not justify buying into it, however. In the face of millions of impoverished and starving people all over the globe, to appease the desire to fit as an ideal image created by the opposite sex for their own ends...I do not deny that it is a terrible thing. I cannot, however, ignore the fact that it is also a popular and encouraged thing. Depression and schizophrenia are not encouraged and/or perpetuated in our society in at all the same way as this.
