Today was my first day of summer. I don't care if the calendar says it doesn't start until June 21; today was my Summer Solstice. I lay out on the beach with Christy, sipped green tea, snacked on pistachios and strawberries, and rotated under the sun, rotisserie style. Instead of reading a feminist essay on The Awakening, I relaxed with The Brothers Karamazov. And when the clouds threatened to cast a shadow on my summer, we escaped inland to Balboa Park for another hour or two of vacation. I even bought a hot dog (I'm a bit of a connoisseur, you know). And now I'm home, still warm from the sun, with pink shoulders as a souvenir. Oh happy day.
