So I did UW Judo club for all of senior year, competed a couple times, and was able to pretty much hold my own in practice against a crowd of mostly brown belts who had been practicing since they were little kids. Yeah, I guess it would be tough to find time to do this if you work more than like 45 hours a week (and are married!). With judo and jiu jitsu, you really can't half-ass it or you'll just get dominated every time. It's very technical, and there's a pretty steep learning curve at the beginning. I've been going for two hours each on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. I've been told it will be six months to a year before my defense gets good enough to not get submitted all the time by these guys, and probably 3-5 years before I'm good enough to actually submit them more than once in a blue moon. The upside is that once I can take on these scary-ass dudes in my gym, very few people outside the gym will be able to intimidate me either.

Plus, it's a fun way to work out, and the urge to improve keeps me coming back, unlike just exercising by myself, which is a chore. I don't really have to go to the gym anymore because I'm getting a far better workout now. You've gotta do something to stay in shape, and at $80 a month plus a few pieces of gear, I don't think it costs much more than a good gym membership would.

I'd take that over the gym any day of the week!
