Hello everyone, and happy holidays!
As you may know, doing field research in China has been an important part of my undergrad experience at the University of Washington. During my sophomore year, and again this past summer, I went on several trips with fellow students and Professor of Anthropology Stevan Harrell, to a village in rural southwest China called Yangjuan. Yangjuan is in a severely impoverished, mountainous region, located along the edge of the Tibetan plateau, and its population is an ethnic Yi minority community. In recent years, political, economic, and ecological changes have dramatically altered their traditional way of life, and education is now seen as the road to prosperity and vitality as a people. We want to help the children of this village get the education they need to grow up and become leaders, both within and outside their community!
Won't you help, too? China's primary education is not free, and many Yangjuan families cannot afford to send their children to middle or high school. A little money goes a long way in rural China, though. Your purchase of a calendar, for a mere $20 ($15 for students) plus $2.50 S/H, will help fund teacher training for teachers at Yangjuan primary school, as well as scholarships to help graduating students afford their middle school tuition. All of the proceeds go directly to Yangjuan elementary and/or its students' families. Your calendar will feature pictures of Yangjuan with its beautiful landscape and people, taken by UW students and professors who do research there. They make great presents, and are useful at home too-everyone needs calendars! And you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you are helping students who really need the support. More information about Yangjuan School, as well as UW research in Yangjuan, can be found at
