Damn Puffs

Back when the Harry Potter fandom was at its height, I was very much involved in the sorting__hat community. It was set up with the four Hogwarts Houses, a strict sorting procedure, prefects and faculty, and the year was divided into terms with various challenges and events for earning housepoints. There was a lot of friendly - and not so friendly - competition. Contrary to the books, the main rivalry was between Slytherin and Hufflepuff and there was a fierce contest between the two. Ravenclaw was a valiant third place and Gryffindor always lagged way way way behind despite having the most members. I found it amusing how it was so different to JK Rowling's intentions.

Since Friday, there has been a House Pride challenge on the mobile game Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery. Slytherin took a very early lead but since Sunday morning, there has been a fierce competition between Slytherin and Hufflepuff. First place keeps switching between those two Houses. Ravenclaw is doing well in third place but Gryffindor seems to have been distracted by something shiny and is ridiculously far behind the others. I was surprised to see the similarity to what happened in the LJ community!

Dare I suggest that JK Rowling has got it wrong? Is a rivalry between Slytherin and Gryffindor just completely contrary to the characteristics of those Houses? Assuming that people have sorted themselves into the correct House, then it certainly seems that on two occasions, the reality has not fit with the books. I suppose it does make sense that the two Houses with loyalty as a main characteristic would fight so strongly to win! Hufflepuff has always seemed like a bit of an afterthought, the jokey House for all the miscellaneous people. I think it's safe to say that you should never underestimate the badgers!
