I was surprised by how neglected it looked and also how quiet it was. It was always really full and popular when we lived there but I guess times change.

I've never been to Berlin so I don't know what tall thing it has but I know there's lots of similar looking TV towers across Germany. There's a funny family story about just that thing actually: my aunt and uncle came over on a surprise visit one year and my uncle knew that there was a distinctive tower nearby so when he saw a tower, he just headed for it. Except that there were quite a few towers in the area and he ended up just driving from one to another trying to find Dortmund! Moral of the story, don't navigate Germany by TV towers!

The restaurant is still there and I believe it was open on the day I went although I didn't go in it. I only remembered about it when I was on my way back down in the lift. They did used to be quite popular, I think it was the novelty of the new technology that allowed it at that time. But now we have Internets and revolving restaurants up towers are no big deal.

I googled "berlin tower thing" and you're right its a tv tower, tallest structure in Germany apperntly and fitted with what is clearly the ubiquitous restaurant (now revolving at twice the speed from when it was originally built - the things you learn from wiki...!). Its the only tv tower I ever noticed so thanks for the tip on not navigating by such thigns, well, outside of Berlin at least! :)

I'm old school and still think a revolving restaurant is a nifty thing *g*

They made the restaurant twice as fast?? That just seems like it's begging for trouble. I get travel sick on trains, I'd hate to get travel sick in a restaurant.

I'm sure there was some sketch in a 70s tv show that had something along those lines, the restaurant spinning faster and faster so all the food and then the diners ended up flying off in all directions!

There probably was, it sounds about right. Google doesn't seem to bring up anything which is disappointing.
