I mentioned the other week that I was going to redo the psychedelic John Lennon drawing that I did several years ago. I thought it would look really good redone in Illustrator, it would have nice sharp lines and bright colours then. The original drawing isn't too bad but it could do to be bolder I think. Mind you, it probably doesn't help that it's been hung in my room facing the window so it's possibly faded a bit from the sun. This is the original drawing:

I was very proud of it at the time even though there were several things that hadn't worked out the way I wanted them to: the stick in his top right hand was supposed to be a guitar but I didn't have enough room for it; the dove on his top left hand looks more like a fat pigeon, and the hat in the bottom left hand was put in out of desperation because I couldn't think of anything else to put there. Some time after I'd finished the drawing, I realised I'd made quite a large mistake in it. There's a rainbow on either side of his legs at the bottom but it doesn't join up in the middle! I completely forgot to draw it and it's bugged me ever since. Still, all of those things can be corrected now!
I took that original drawing into Illustrator and spent most of a day outlining all the different elements. Then the next morning, I dropped in some basic colour as a base to start working on before building it up. I finished the head (bar the halo), the hands and the objects he's holding that morning but haven't touched it since so this is what it currently looks like.

I got the guitar in this time, yay and that dove looks so much better than the other one. Again I couldn't think what to put in that fourth hand but the heart works perfectly and I really like how it's come out. And see how I've remembered to add in the middle of the rainbow this time? ;) I was working on it in D's last class and he was impressed with it. He said I'd managed to remain true to my original drawing as well as capturing the essence of that art style so that was pretty good to hear. Kind of a shame he won't get to see it finished though.
