I've been in Manchester just over 24 hours and it's already been most eventful. I arrived yesterday about 11.30 and had fun finding the place because my phone decided to play up and I couldn't access Google maps or any internet. I had a vague direction of where I was going and luckily I managed to find it. The girl on Reception said something about how the previous student had left a bag on the bed which would need moving so this other member of staff called George said he'd take me up and shift it. The girl also said that they'd run out of bedding packs but that they were on their way so she'd get one up to me.
I followed George up to the room and couldn't believe my eyes. It was filthy. Every surface was covered in dust and coffee rings and various marks and general grime. The bathroom had a pile of clutter under the sink and bottles in the shower, plus the walls were all covered with splashes and one of the walls in the shower had mud smeared halfway up. Oh, and the battery in the smoke alarm had gone so it was beeping every few minutes. George said that they didn't have a cleaner at the moment as she was on holiday this week. Apart from it being a stupid time for that as it's one of Manchester's busiest weekends what with it being a bank holiday and Pride (which starts on Friday and finishes on Monday night). Also, if this was stuff left by the student who had been staying here the past school year, then surely he'd left in July which gives plenty of time for it to be cleaned. George said he would clean it himself while I was out that afternoon so I went off into Manchester hoping it would be greatly improved when I returned.
I got back about 5.30 to a vast improvement. All the surfaces had been cleaned and all the stuff left by the student had gone. The bed had been made up as well. It was much better. I did notice that there weren't any towels or toilet paper. I'd rung up on Wednesday to check if towels were provided or if I needed to take my own and was told they were. I went down to Reception but it was closed so I had to knock on the night security door where George finally arrived. When I said I was missing towels and toilet paper he said that they didn't provide either. He asked if I could manage for the night, to which I replied, "Not without toilet paper!" so he went off to see if he could find some. He came back with a small roll and also a towel that he'd managed to find and advised me to take it up with the girl on Reception in the morning.
I didn't have a great night's sleep because the bed didn't have a bottom sheet as such, it just had some kind of papery mattress protector which was really rough. I ended up sleeping wrapped in the duvet instead which was not fun. On my way out this morning, I went into Reception and spoke to the girl there. I said that I was not impressed with the state of the room to which she said it was an unfortunate exception and she could only apologise for it. I then asked about the towels and toilet paper. She said that they'd run out of towels yesterday and had been waiting on a delivery which had arrived this morning so I said I'd pick one up on my way back. As for the toilet roll, they don't provide that. I can't get my mind round that one. Bedding and towels, yes, toilet paper, no. Most bizarre. When I got back at 4.30 tonight, the Reception was still open so I called in and picked up my towel. But when I got back to my room, there was another one on the bed! Along with some more bedding, this time including a bottom sheet! So now I have three towels, a full set of bedding and some toilet paper. Hopefully I'm sorted now.
It's really annoying because I stayed in student accommodation for Pride the year before last and that was great. I had towels, bedding, toilet paper and my own kettle! I wanted to stay there again but that place didn't have internet access and this one does. It's difficult when it comes down to a kettle or internets.
