A week of Good Stuffs and Bad Stuffs

Jun 06, 2010 20:37

It's been one of those weeks where I've not really been up to much worth posting. There's been little bits of things that I could have posted about but they weren't really worth a whole post. So I'm combining them all into this one in a sort of summary of the last week.

Good Thing: I got an e-mail from my friend Vickie, a couple of days ago. She was one of the other temps on the last placement I had and left just after I did because she got a permanent job. She's been busy getting to grips with that lately so I'd not heard from her for a while and now she's gone away on holiday, but it was nice that she got in touch.

Bad Thing: Her new job isn't local, it's about half an hour away so she's decided it would be easier to move closer to work. Unfortunately, that means she's not going to be living close to me any more.

Good Thing: I also got an e-mail from my friend John, asking if I would be interested in doing some Trans Awareness Training at a youth group's residential weekend. That was quite a surprise! I've been thinking about it but I'll probably say yes, and do the usual Trans 101 with the four line exercise because it's a good starting point.

Bad Thing: The only downside is that it's possibly going to be in Cheshire somewhere and unlike all the Trans Awareness Training I did when I was a youth worker, I won't get paid for it. I might get travel expenses though so I suppose that's something.

Good Thing: In addition to all the above e-mails, I was most surprised the other day when I got a very colourful envelope in the post. Even more surprising was that it was a letter! A proper letter-type letter too! It was very nice and happy and made me smile lots, so thank you rebecca_star. And I shall be scribbling a response forthwith.

Good Thing: My laptop has been struggling for a while, mostly with regards to the amount of memory it has, and I've been considering buying more for it. I wasn't sure if I'd have to send it away or if I could do it myself without invalidating the warranty on it. So I rang Dell on Friday to find out. (I'd already used their online chat to ask but got told I'd have to ring Technical Support about it.) I was assured that I could put it in myself and as long as I got memory from them, it wouldn't be a problem. The bloke on the phone checked how much my laptop could take and the cost. It turned out that it's only got two slots so can have a maximum of 2GB - it's currently got two sticks making up 1GB - and it was £29.99 for 1GB. The bloke then asked me if I wanted to order it, and said that he could knock off the cost of postage for me. I thought I might as well so went ahead with that. As he was putting it through, he said he'd check and see if he could do me a discount, and after putting me on hold for a bit, came back and said that he could do 2GB for £45 total because it's 'such an old computer'. I suppose 2½ years is kind of old now but it's still going strong! Although it also needs a new battery but I can't afford £120 for that.

Bad Thing: For some reason, the invoice has come addressed to MISS Nathaniel which is totally bizarre. I had wondered once or twice if the bloke was calling me ma'am but he had a strong accent and I wasn't sure.

Bad Thing: I fancied some Irn Bru the other day so I got a 2 litre bottle of it on Friday. Saturday afternoon I came to open it and once the seal was broken, I let the gas escape a bit before taking the cap off all the way as I usually do. All of a sudden, it just spurted up and sprayed out the top at great force. It only went in two directions rather than 360° but one of those directions was all over me and the other was all over my bookcase and floor. I was soaked and my floor was covered. I wiped the floor several times but it still feels kind of sticky. It also sprayed the pile of library books sat on top of my book cupboard so they're all sticky too. And earlier on, I found some of it still on the cupboard door! I'm betting I'm going to be finding it in places for the next couple of days.

Good Thing: I must be mad but I've signed up to 28books14weeks again! I've attempted this challenge twice before and failed miserably each time so this year I'm aiming for 10 books in 14 weeks, although I'd like to make it to 14 books if I can. There's not many people signed up to it at all this year, currently just me and rebecca_star so if anyone else is interested, feel free to come and join us!
