The saga continues

As soon as I was up this morning, I decided to have a try of the controller on my new PS2 to see if it was going to be a problem or not. I put the Tomb Raider: Legend disc in, got the PS2 splash screen up and then .... nothing. So that was it off to a good start. I tried Ratchet and Clank next. That started up fine but as it went into the game, a message came up on the screen saying that there wasn't enough room on the memory card to save it and gave me the option of retrying or continuing without saving. I thought I might as well continue without saving as I was only testing the controller out really. So I pressed the X button to select that option. Nothing happened. I pressed it again. And again. And againagainagainagainagainagain... Still nothing happened. I wasn't sure, but something told me that the controller might not be working.

I tried another game, and the same thing happened: error message saying that the memory card was full and not being able to scroll through the options or select one. I wondered if the controller was plugged in properly so I pushed it in a bit more but that didn't make any difference. If anything, it made it worse because that apparently rendered it invisible and a new error popped up on the screen telling me to plug a controller in. When I had the same issue with the last game, I realised that the controller was well and truly buggered. I was not a happy bunny so I packed everything up and went back into town. En route, I was trying to decide if I should get another pre-owned console from GAME or just go to Argos for a brand-new one.

When I got to GameStation, the two members of staff behind the counter had been there yesterday, and one of them was the cute blond one who served me. He was busy dealing with someone though, so I went to the other. I swung the bag up and put it on the counter at which point Blondie said "Don't tell me it doesn't work!" I replied that the controller was broken, the memory card was full and the Tomb Raider game didn't work. He looked rather crestfallen and said that that had been the best console they had. I didn't dare think what condition the others were in if that was the best one. Anyway, the other lad went off to see if he could get another controller but soon came back saying that there weren't any more. I was fully expecting that that would mean I'd get my money back which I was okay with but no! The lad had a solution which involved saying to Blondie "You didn't see me do this." He did a bit of jiggerypokery on the till and then presented me with a brand-new controller that should have cost £20. Not a bad alternative! Considering that the console had also had a brand new still-in-the-package cable to connect the console to the TV as well, it was certainly turning into more of a bargain that it had been yesterday.

Once that was sorted, he then had a look at the memory card. He couldn't believe that it was completely full but said he could clear it for me. He actually had to use my console to do that! It turned out that the previous owner of the card had put a DVD player on it and that had taken up half the space! He wiped it all clean - which actually meant he wiped off my GH game from yesterday but having to redo it would be no great hardship at all. Believe me. The last problem was the non-playing disc. The lad asked if there were any more copies of Tomb Raider: Legend and was told that there were but that he'd picked out the best one. Still not daring to think about the condition of the inferior ones. He actually got one of the others, cleaned it up in the polishy-grinding machine and that was that taken care of. He said that if I had any more problems to let them know and they'd sort it out for me. He was a decent lad, as was the one that served me yesterday; we had a nice chat while he was sorting stuff out but I still have to wonder about the quality of their 'best' stuff!

And you will be glad to know, as I was, that the controller worked perfectly and so did the newly cleaned Tomb Raider game. I spent all afternoon testing it all though... Just to be sure.
