How long do you give a book before you give up on it? One chapter? A couple? 50 pages? More, or less? Or do you struggle through to the bitter end, no matter how bad the book is?

According to author Mark Billingham, if a book hasn't grabbed you within the first 20 pages, then not only should you give up on it, but you should 'throw it across the room angrily'. Blimey.

There's also the 'rule of fifty' which author Nancy Pearl came up with. If you're 50 years old or younger, give a book 50 pages before deciding whether to give up or not. If you're over 50, subtract your age from 100, and the result is how many pages you should read before making the decision.

I'm currently reading a book for NetGalley and - well, the fact that I'm asking about giving up on books should tell you how well it's going. The blurb sounded really good but it's been very dull so far. I'm up to page 49 out of 304, which is just over 15% and also pretty much up to the 50 page rule. I'm already thinking of what book I'm going to read next, which I think it's a good sign that I've had enough of this one. There's so many good books out there, life is too short to stick with the bad ones!

of books and comic books, getting to know you...
