It hadn't been long since Daisukenojo had started learning how to skateboard. He had thought that he was getting pretty good at it, practicing on his own after watching the older kids pull off some tricks down by the park. Sure what he could do wasn't anything compared to them but he was definitely determined to get to that point.
He had began hanging out with them and got a closer look at how they did things, the tricks they learned, and how they even acted and talked around each other. Some had acknowledged him, and even given a him a nickname of his own.
"Your name's way too long, man. And it ain't exactly..." He waved his hand in the air, struggling to find the right word to fit in.
Daisukenojo just scoffed at that. "Not like I could do anythin' 'bout that."
The other boy shrugged before cupping his chin in his hand. "Your last name's Bito, right?"
"Yeah. What 'bout it?"
"Bito. Bito... Beat-- How 'bout we start callin' ya Beat now."
"Hey, that ain't half bad."
And the name Daisukenojo was left in the dust.
Despite that, many didn't approve of him just yet. They had come up with all types of reasons. He was too green, he was probably just full of himself, but the one that came up the most was that he had yet to prove himself. Beat was never one who would back down from a challenge even at a young age. He approached them and demanded to know what he could do to make himself worthy to them. All they did was ask him to perform a grind on some railings. He hadn't expected it to be that easy.
It was when he was actually faced with said rail when things began looking bleak. It had been much longer than he had pictured it would be and it didn't help that he had never practiced on something longer than the few railings and ledges over at the park they frequented.
"Ya don't gotta do it, Beat. Just lay off those bastards."
"Naw, man! This ain't nothing I can't do."
The other group members just sneered at the boy. "Ya gonna wuss out now, Daisukenojo?"
"I'ma do it, yo! Ain't gonna chicken out or nothing! And the name's Beat!" Those few words were more than enough to get Beat riled up. He got on his board and got some distance between himself and the rail. Picking up some speed, he pushed against the tail and got on the rail easy. He kept his knees bent and kept his center of gravity low enough to keep himself balanced as he slid down.
Cheers erupted from the onlookers, and many impressed faces could be seen in the small crowd. Beat snickered to himself, proud at his own accomplishment. But it was at that time, that tiny distraction that was enough to throw him off.
He had leaned back too far and lost his balance. Before he knew it, his board left his feet and he found himself falling. Straight into the rail. Yeah, he was definitely regretting that move right now.
There was a collective groan from the end of the rail as Beat tipped to his side and fell on the steps.
"Ooooh, that's gotta hurt."
Beat woke up to a jolt. He blinked a few times before cursing beneath his breath, thankful that it had just been a dream. He couldn't imagine going through that kind of pain again.
