2. The Spirit

Still catching up... On January 3, I saw The Spirit.
This movie's gotten a lot of really bad reviews, but I ended up kind of liking it. A little long, but not out of control or anything. Yes, the acting is way over the top (a lot has been made over the villains wearing Nazi uniforms at one point, and you should know that Samuel L Jackson is involved,) but to me it just added to the whole Frank-Miller-makes-a-comic-book-into-a-movie thing. The amount of the voiceover-ing did get annoying, but I got that as a comic book device as well, and it's easy for me to overlook it when a movie is as pretty as this one was.
It probably helps that I'm willing to forgive a lot when a movie is pretty, but this was really pretty. The costumes and colors and everything just really worked for me. It probably also helped that I'd read so many bad reviews going into it, so my expectations were really low.
I would hesitate to recommend this to anyone, since apparently no one else has liked it. I guess that if you can enjoy intentional (I think/I hope) overacting and nifty coloration, then by all means, see it, but don't blame me if you hate it.
