Believe it or not, I finally posted another chapter: "The Evenstar." Aragorn suffers morning-after effects, has a talk with Elrond, and gets naked....a thrill for all the fangurls

Aaahhh! Thanks for satisfying my SoE addiction...at least for the time being. Arwen and Aragorn's confrontation (for lack of a better word) in the orchard was well done, and you conveyed that she is of two minds of quite nicely. Loved the touch of her stumbling over the root. Very consistent with my own notions that the Eldar are not quite the ethereal beings they are painted to be in the "histories."
So, Demon-Spawn the Younger and I plan to take in "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" this weekend. Seeing as how she is a Viggo fangurl (good taste, my teenager has), I may just be able to persuade her to see "Eastern Promises" in the next couple of weeks or so.
I still haven't read the latest chapter of Sword (talk about spoilers--I am interested in seeing what is there that I haven't seen before). I don't want to be left out of this discussion because of spoilers. I'm one of those people who read the last chapter of a book as soon as it starts to hook me.
I want to see "Elizabeth: The Golden Age"--it's in my neighborhood also--I am still behind on everything because my internet was screwed up for almost two days. Cableman claims it is fixed now. So hope to catch up on reading and correspondence.
Elizabeth: The Golden Age - in a word...pandemonium_213October 13 2007, 23:09:23 UTC
...disappointing. Visually, it's a beautiful film, almost like a series of stills from a graphic novel. The writers and director didn't give Blanchett enough to work with, and Clive Owen is flat. At best, I'd give it an "OK, I guess." At best. Elizabeth I with Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons was far better, and then there's Elizabeth R with Glenda Jackson - my favorite. Unfortunately, E the GA pales in comparison.

That’s one New York Times movie review worth of the genre. Some great bits: “the bastard monarch who ruled England with an iron grip and two tightly closed legs.” And did I not just say that I love to watch Cate Blanchett and the reviewer calls her “irresistibly watchable.” Also loved “sublimated her libidinal energies through court intrigue until she found sweet relief by violently bringing the Spanish Empire to its knees.” Nice. Also Clive Owen: “the queen’s favorite smoldering slab of man meat” or “hanging off a ship’s rigging as the wind gently stirs his chest hair.” This writer is trying to pan this movie? I think maybe I should see it. (Tomorrow maybe? Too late tonight.) I also really snorted at “serious-minded historical drama with dubious contemporary overtones” - hey, I’ve gotten a couple of reviews of my Maitimo and Findekáno that come dangerously close to that criticism. I may be on my way to the big money. Hilarious review. Thanks for the tip. Don’t know how I missed it.

Durgis' review was a hoot and a half! Likewise, I didn't read it in this morning's paper, but laughed out loud at a number of her comments this evening. If you go to the movie expecting spectacular visuals (oooh, those Armada scenes) and a script that is just this side of camp, you'll enjoy it!

Oh, shit. I was afraid of that. I did already read some ho-hum reviews (me and that reading habit!). I love to look at Cate Blanchett though and I figured the costumes and cinematography would be good. Now I'm really torn. Yeah, I agree with you on the ones you mentioned above. Elizabeth R with Glenda Jackson is unfortunately always my standard for comparison, which pretty much leaves most others in the dust. I did really like Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons, of course.

It is a lovely film to look at, and Blanchett and Owen are attractive actors, but...but...
Jackson was incredible in Elizabeth R. She really set the bar high.
Glad to hear that a) you fixed you formatting and b) that your cable's OK. With regard to the latter, please don't fret about timing for e-mails and such. I'm always around. :^)

Cable's fine and I'm starting to catch up. Although I've spent too much time doing stupid things today. I did, however, when I couldn't stay online for more than a couple of minutes, finish my next chapter for A New Day and sent it along to Dawn for comments. But I can't stop looking at it. It has one of those awful first paragraphs and some record-length sentences that ought to be illegal, but at least one of them I really like. Oh, well...thanks for the indulgence though.
