Ok, what the crap happened to Holloween!? It used to be the best holiday next the XMAS and birthdays. Now it just seems to be given a cursory glance by the populace.
I was at the store the other day running some errands. Went to Kroger and Wal-Mart. What's one of the first things I see when I enter each store? Christmas decorations. Wait...what!? Christmas Decorations!? It's not even the end of Oct. yet! What's going on. I go to see the costumes they have and I am also dissapointed. Not about the quality of the costumes, can't expect much from Kroger and Wal-Mart. I'm dissapointed about what the cosumes are of. Seems everything is either a pirate, princess, or some other cutsey/cuddly thing. I only saw about 1 vampire and several super-hero costumes. Where's the werewolves, zombies, and skeletons? And the Holloween decorations they offer are less than impressive.
As I'm on my way home with Emma and a decent supply of Holloween candy (for me and the kiddies) I get to drive through a couple of neighborhoods. I see almost no holloween decorations anywhere. Nothing. Not even a cobweb covered tree.
I get home and start perusing the internet. I find several articles from various news sources saying how parents aren't going to let their kids trick-or-treat this year b/c "it's so dangerous out now, you never know who the kids are getting their candy from". Have we really become so paranoid as a society that we think everyone in our neighboorhood is a child molester/mass murderer?
There's also a lot of mention about Christian (and I use the term loosely) groups continuing their hope to ban Holloween b/c it is "evil". Oh for crying out loud. If you don't like it, DON'T CELEBRATE IT! There's billions of people in this world who don't really like Christmas and you don't see them complaining about being forced to put up a tree in their house, do you? No. Holloween is not about evil and whitchcraft or anything like that (well, maybe a little evil). It's really about kids going door to door, getting the crap scared out of them provided the owner has some imagination, and getting candy as a reward.
Well, that's it! I am determined to help Holloween become a legit holiday again! I will have Emma go trick-or-treating every year, she'll wear a cool costume, have a big basket to hold lots of candy (of which I will secretly take my cut) and if I stay home, I will scare the bejeezus out of the children that come to get candy. And the ones who don't come in costume, they get nothing.
