I've been following Torchwood Miracle Day not only watching the episodes but on the different forums. The one thing that sort of stands out to me is that Captn Jack is so alone and kind of scared. Look at his history, everyone leaves him. As a child he is separated from his brother and then loses his father to an alien attack. In Dr Who he's left on satellite 5 and burns out his vortex manipulator to get to earth only to find himself in Victorian England. He finds a home of sorts in Torchwood only to have Alex kill the entire staff except Jack at the New Year 2000. Then he builds a staff only to lose Owen who he is able to bring back to a form of life only to lose him and Tosh at the end of season 2. In COE he first loses his home when the Hub blows up and then loses Ianto to the 456. Remember Ianto's death where he kept calling "Don't leave me". It's topped off by being manipulated into sacrificing his grandson to save all the children of earth and by doing so loses his daughter. It's not surprising that he shies away from relationships he's been hurt so many times. One of the saddest scenes so far is his drunken call to Gwen when she's distracted by Ester giving her the pc call with Rhys and the baby for just forgetting Jack, not even telling him what was going on just disconnecting the call.
