I admire her devotion to her beliefs and do not support the war, but do support the men and women who fight because our leaders sent them to fight. I do not have much respect/admiration for the islamic culture as it is today, because of the treatment of women and the lack of personal freedom on many levels. Having said that I do not belive you can go to war and make others into your image. We may have many problems here but we are open about them and still have the freedom to address them.
By all accounts the war has resulted in more fanatics and fundamentalists flooding into Iraq while the better educated and more westernized Iraqis like Allan are either being killed or leaving the country for Jordan or Syria.
I am amazed that Riverbend has stayed so long. According to her, Iraqi women were doing a lot better before the war than they are now that Shia fundamentalists are playing such a big role in the government. The strict subservience of women either to their father or to their husband is not really in the Quran any more than it is in the bible. It certainly is part of Arab tribal culture, though.
I know every religion has it's fundamentalists, it is one reason I am so passionate about the separation of church and state. Thank you founding fathers for that one! I want it kept that way, as a reminder I look at all the reasons in ie..history (catholic church), and present societies that have religion base governments. thans for sharing your knowledge on the area, I sometimes can get on a rant and not see as clearly, all parts of a very complex situation. I feel like the Gilda Radner news lady I always end the rant having to say (never mind:)
I may have overstated things, since Saddam's sons undoubtedly did rape and otherwise pester a lot of young women while he was in power. I do not really think that they would have been allowed to succeed him, however.
