I thought leaving Japan meant getting away from stupid, annoyingly frequent natural disasters. But nooo, I return to Mississippi so I can get bashed in the head with a freaking category-5 hurricane. Thanks a lot.
my mini-update... I feel somewhat like a news reporter...gammaraeAugust 29 2005, 22:40:24 UTC
My parents and sister don't have to worry too much, although I'm being pummeled by ten tons of rain and there are branches all over the ground from where the wind has ripped them off the trees. It is not a good time to be wearing a skirt. Classes have been cancelled for tomorrow morning...
The rest of my family are okay--those that live in New Orleans left (along with the other 1 million people that live there), and although my grandmother's house in Hattisburg no longer has any shingles, she's fine. The neighbors that I knew in New Orleans are all fine, as far as I know, and the Superdome survived (minus a few patches of roof) so those that couldn't leave the city are all okay, too. The city is now partially underwater, but it could have been worse.
Unfortunately Bay St. Louis apparently got the worst of the storm surge, a 22-foot high tidal wave, so I have no idea if my house survived (it's only a block from the beach) or how the old church did (it was right across the beachfront road). But both those buildings survived Camille, so here's hoping... Last anyone heard from there was that half the courthouse was gone, and that was this morning. No one's heard anything from BSL or the nearby towns on the coast since then, and the rescue people say this is not a good sign. So yeah, I'm kind of worried about that... but there's not much I can do.
